The certain registers can be programmed to recognize sale items and immediately reduce the price, rather than having the cashier calculating the sale price.

The barcode scanner is the next best known piece of electronic point of sale equipment. The barcode scanner is a gun shaped laser producing device that is able to read the barcodes on a product. The laser is activated when the user pulls a small trigger under the laser section. This laser will not blind, but it is not comfortable on the eyes. No damage will occur by shining the laser on the body or hands. The original barcode scanners were only able to read the barcode if the code and the scanner were in perfect alignment. In addition, the old style barcode scanners were not able to read codes fast or if the code had any wrinkles in it.

The new barcode scanners do not need to be near the product, be correctly aligned or have the barcode be flat. The new electronic point of sale equipment scanners are able to detect a barcode being quickly passed over a table. This can be repeated at high rates of speed to scan large amounts of product very quickly as to keep the lines moving. Handheld versions of the barcode scanner work great for large items. The only downfall to the scanners is the problem reading is codes that are under reflective packaging plastic. It may be necessary to tear plastic in order to obtain a proper scan of the proper.
